I am in the process of rebuilding my transfercase and transmission and I wonder if I should replace the throwout bearing and clutch while I’m at it. The PO said the clutch that is in it has low miles on it (maybe 10-15K) but I haven’t been able to drive it since I got it so I can’t say for sure if the clutch or bearing is good.

What should I look for when inspecting the clutch, is there a spec on the thickness? Or should I just replace them both since I’m in there and if ones I take out good just hang on to them for spares?

    Thanks,
    -Dean

By the way, the transmission and transfercase rebuilds are coming along well. Went with dupli-color cast iron engine paint on the cases. It looks nice! I'll hopefully start a thread in the rebuild section in a week or so and post some pics.

Dean, if it were mine, I'd absolutely replace the throwout bearing - cheap insurance. I'd take the clutch off and inspect it and the flywheel surface. Then if I didn't see any scuffing or blue/burnt marks on the cover or flywheel, I'd likely just replace the disk unless it looked brand new.

BTW, which Jeep is this? Looks like you're in the wrong forum.

Thanks for the reply. And sorry about the confusion but this is the right forum. I joined before I actually got my ECJ5 and I never updated my profile. Just did it...it's 63 CJ5 with lots of cool stuff, but it needs a lot before I'll get it on the road.

    Thanks,
    -Dean

Just had this discussion with my son on his "new" '77. We inspected the disc, which looked recent and had lots of material left (depth of rivits and grooves), just a little glazing. So we roughed up the surface with a polishing disc and reused. Pressure plate looked good, fingers for the T/O Bearing had little wear. But, the flywheel looked original, we had it turned as the surface was marred and blued in spots from burning. It was probably original and had never been turned when the PO installed a new clutch. T/O Bearing, always replace. Cleaned all with component cleaner/ brake cleaner.

inspect it and make the call, you have already done over half the work when you get the trans out,if there was any doubt i would do the whole clutch deal, unless you just love takeing this stuff apart and putting it back together:rofl: BTDT
