My 1968 Jeepster Commando's alternator finally gave up. 225 V6, 3 spd. It will spin freely with no belt on it, but freezes when spun at higher RPM's. It is a 5 wire system with an external regulator. Would like to keep it stock, or at least as stock as possible. What's the chances of finding a replacement? Does anyone know where one can be found? If I can't find one, has someone done a conversion and know what wires go where? So far I can only find a 2 wire alternator.
    Thanks in advance.

I would go ahead with a 2 wire easy to do and your whole charging system will be much healthier.

could look in the phonebook for an alt repair shop, and have them look at it.

If you're really wanting to keep the original, they can be rebuilt. We rebuilt several alternators in my high school Vo-Tech class for a local salvage yard, just for the practice.
