I have a 1971 CJ5 225, I recently converted to electronic ignition and it seemed to run fine. I noticed that my inline fuel filter had very little fuel in it, just enough to keep the filter wet. My jeep recently is hard to start once it is runing it runs fine and does not seem to starve for fuel even though the filter seems to look like their is not enough fuel. I would think the filter bowl would be completely full. I went ahead and changed the fuel pump and it does not provide anymore fuel. Has anyone installed an electric fuel pump? Or is my fuel problem normal. My Elk hunt starts in a couple of months so I am trying to get the old Jeep ready. Thanks for the help.

Doesn't sound like there's a problem to me if it runs fine.

I don't think mine is ever "full" at idle either. Unless it's actually starved for fuel I don't see a problem.

It's probably normal. If the fuel is going out as fast as it's going in, I would think that meant the filter is clean and unrestricted, and working fine. If it was packed full of fuel I'd be concerned that it might be getting plugged up. I could be wrong though. Carry a spare if you're concerned, cheap insurance.

I put an electric pump on mine...but for a different reason.....had a problem getting the old carter to prime before winding the battery down. Now just turn the key on for about 5-10 seconds before cranking and she starts like a charm.

Agree with the other guys....even with the priming electric pump, my fuel filter does not look full either....as long as the flow is there you will probably be fine...
