I think ive traced my electrical problem to the volt/regulator. The reg is located on the firewall pass. side. Its a little black rectangular box with a terminal on each end one says FLD and the other IGN anyone have a part number or make on this and is this reg. Can I upgrade to one thats a little newer this thing looks ancient when you look at the back of it . The alternator is brand new Delco Remy with 2 terminals one has an R next to it and the other an F . When I bypassed the regulator I had about 14 volts output with the reg hooked up I only have 12

If it were me I would just get a new alternator that has an internal regulator like all the modern vehicles have, it would give you extra capacity and just eliminate the excess wiring. yes you can get a new regualtor at virtually any autoparts store though.

It sounds like you do have an internally regulated alternator. Throw that regulator out. I was never able to figure mine out. Internally regulated delco remy alternators are a beautiful thing. It should be pumping out around 14 volts, probably 14.5
