Hello everyone, I'm a new member and have a question about if there's a difference on where the manual steering box is between a 71 cj-5 and a 72 cj-5?

The reason I'm asking is because I want to put power steering on my 71 cj-5 and a local guy told me that they made the 72's with a power steering option and as long as the two have the steering box in the same place, I should be able to get one from a 72 or later cj-5 and do a fairly straight forward conversion. Is this correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you much,

    Barry

'71 CJ-5s had Ross steering, '72+ had Saginaw steering. Two totally different setups.

The Saginaw is more desirable of the two. No the boxes aren't in the same place. Ross is behind the front axle, Saginaw is in front.

There's some stuff in the Technical Library's steering section on the Saginaw conversion.
