Not a true restoration question, but wasn't sure where else to ask it. I have a '66 CJ5 but the under seat tool box has been removed. I'd like to install a new one, but I am not sure how to go about doing so, and I some questions:

Do the boxes have their own floors?

How do the passenger seats mount in relation to the boxes? I have a current style high back passenger seat, would that interfere with being able to use/access the tool box?

I appreciate any input/suggestions/assistance anyone might be able to give.

Nope, the bottom of the tool box is the Jeep floor itself. Reproductions of the toolbox are available, they're just spot welded in place.

The early stock lowback pass. seat mounted to the top of the toolbox housing with pins on a couple of pivot brackets, so it could tip forward to access the t/box. The later style used a different frame, and the seat folded in the middle. Anyway, your high-back seat probably won't get along with the t/box, won't be able to tip it forward enough. The original seats were able to tip forward a little, then lift off the brackets for quick removal. You might be able to do something like that.

Here's a photo of the '55-early '60's seats, and the next generation seat mounting frames in front of those. The early style had a one-piece frame and the seat cushions were part of it, the whole thing mounted to the floor. The later style had frames that attached to the floor, and the seats mounted to those. (Thanks for the photo Howard!;) )

You know where to send the royalty check Ron :).

    Repro boxes are available.

I had semi-high backs in Tonka, thankfully they had reclining backs or I would not have been able to get the tool box door up, in the upright position the backs hit the windshield before the seat bottom came up far enough for clearance :(.

You weren't clear in your post how your seats are currently mounted but I'd say if you intend to keep them as a start you should scare up some late 60's seat mounts as pictured in my, I mean Ron's, picture :).

On a '66 the passenger seat was a fold and tumble - both for access to the toolbox and rear seat. Here's a pic - in my case the toolbox was removed for an aux heater:

Getting in and out of the toolbox will be a pain with the highbacks. One tip is to remove the hingepins from the lid so you can just pull the lid out completely.
