Can anyone tell me what the single connector switch is on top of the T-18? I think the two pole switch (the one facing to the rear) is for the back up lights?

Must be a later model transmission. The top would be neutral safety switch, side would be backup.

Of course! '73's didn't come with a neutral safety switch? According the VIN it came with a T-18 but that doesn't mean it wasn't changed out. There's evidence of work being done on the trans (blue gasket sealer squeezed out around all of the mating surfaces) so it's definitely been out of the jeep.
    Thanks

Check to see what its behavior is. Do you have a digital voltmeter (DVM)? When is it open and when is it closed?

If it's closed in 4th (top gear), it's likely for transmission controlled spark (TCS), a smog device.

No neutral safety switch on a '73 with a manual transmission as I recall.

I've got a voltmeter and I'll check it out. If it's a TCS it won't be needed. Whatever smog control equipment that was original equipment was long gone by the time I got it. Plus I'm putting an HEI distributor on the 360 when it goes back in. Thanks for the info.

Did the check. It's a TCS! Closed in 4th and open otherwise. Thanks.
