I was wondering if anyone out there has made there own soft top for their jeep? I found a guy who has a 63 CJ6 and he had a soft top made to fit over his custom roll cage on his jeep. He used factory doors, but everything else custom made. The sides and back all unzip. Cost $1800. That is why I want to make my own.

What is it about the Bestop CJ6 tops that you don't like?

If you're after more of a Supertop approach seems like the easiest thing to do would be buy a CJ5 version and lengthen it.

The custom top was appr. 4 " taller than the bestop which would fit me better. I am 6' 4" and my younger brother, who also goes out with me is 6' 6". The extra height would be nice. I have thought about buying a used CJ 5 top and adding on to make it work. Right now I am look at all possiblities and getting other people's opinions or experiances before I jump into this. The other thing I liked about the top is it was built around a custom roll cage. Building a top to fit my roll cage would allow me to build the cage to the height and length I want verse what would fit into a bestop top.

FWIW - the Bestop CJ6 top is ~2" taller than the same CJ5 top.

I'm 6'3" and have oodles of clearance under my top and cage.

I've looked at e my cage ...and realized it's close to being enough for a top support, but all told I think it'd be alot of work to get it to look right (have enough tension in the top, ect.) as the top needs to fit to the outside of the body and the rollcage to the inside.

At any rate - some pics of my cage and the top/cage clearance:

Thanks for the pictures and info. I was off thinking I wouldn't fit under a Bestop Top. BTW, I really like your rollcage and your thought of attaching the cage to the body and not the frame. That makes sense to me. Would you mind emailing me with larger photos of the roll cage? I would like to build my cage like yours if you don't mind. After I put in the new enigne, the top is going to be the next project.

    Thanks,

    Matt

FWIW - since having the cage done I've seen "tie to frame" mounts that provide for flex. At some point I wouldn't mind putting some of those in - at least in the center and maybe the forward legs.

Shoot me a PM and let me know what pics you want...I have tons.
