    Hello Folks
    I run a 1955 CJ 5 stock
How can I check my oil level on my trans?
Also what would be the right oil for that?
    Thanks
    Jason:flag: :JEEP:

You'll find a fill plug on the side. Fill it till it dribbles back out. I use regular gear oil.

Make sure to check and fill transfer case at the same time. Same method.

A setup like this is best way I've found to make it easy and relatively clean:

I have always been told differently. For the past 40 years. I was under the impression that the oil level should be 1/2" below The inlet and the way to check this is to use your little finger, which will fit through the whole and the difference between the tip of your finger and the first knuckle is approximately 1/2" and you should be able to just feel the fluid level with the tip of your little finger. Have I been wrong for the past 40 years

    wrong ? I don't think so
Your method is what I do to determine whether to add oil or not

Filling the oil level until comes back out makes more sense. And then again, if you cannot feel it with your finger. It's time to add oil. I do not know why I was under that impression, learn something new every 40 years

Hey Doug, it's funny you mentioned 40 years. It was exactly that long ago that I learned about the bent finger trick. JEEP dealer mechanic showed me that summer of '67. :) :hurrican:

 I think I'd have a hard time telling which was oil from the inside of the tranny vs. the outside.....

Usually the outside oil has more sand and grit in it. Hth. R)

I never really figured out how to check my fluid. Seems like in my case, since the tranny and tcase share, oil pours out of one and is low in the other. To combat this, I just completly drain it and fill it every once in a while.
