I need some help - OK a lot of help. I can't seem to find any information on rebuilding a powerlock. I did a search and there are a lot of references to vernco, but all the links are dead.

I have them both front and rear in my CJ and need to know how to tell if they are worn out and how to rebuild them. Do they only limit slip when power is applied? I can spin one tire when the jeep is jacked up and both tires are in the air and was thinking they are worn out because of that.

I have found bits of information on the web, but nothing worthwhile. I need to know how to rebuild them and what clutch disks to use as I have heard there are different types.

Do I have to remove the ring gear when rebuilding them and do I have to reset the backlash and such after removing the carrier?

    Thanks for the help.

I did it to one powerlock. It was easy to do. Got my parts from reider racing. No reason to set up the r&p again.

herm the overdrive guy is who i buy my clutches from. he sells both standard and aggresive clutch packs. rebuilding a powerlock is very easy. i actually have the vernco article on powerlock rebuilds that i printed a couple of years ago before the site went down. there was tons of great info on that site and its a real shame its no longer around. i can fax the article to you if you'd like, but i think what i have printed is the same given in the link above.

and your method of testing does not indicate a worn powerlock. jack both tires off the ground and spin one. the other should spin the same direction indicating that you have some kind of limited slip. if the other tire spins in the opposite direction, you either have an open differential or the limited slip unit is so badly worn out, that it acts like an open differential.

once you identify you have a limited slip in there, drop just one wheel to the ground and try to spin the tire still in the air. there should be a lot of resistance. depending on the limited slip, you may not be able to spin the tire at all by hand. little or no resistance indicates a worn limited slip.

Rebuild is easy. Pop the axles. Mark and remove the carrier bearing caps(They need to go back on on the same side and the same end up).Drop the carrier. Mark the casing halves(I have had bolt alignment problems in the past when I didn't do this). Split the carrier. Remove the clutches. Install new cluches. Bolt carrier back together. If you have two piece side gears, you MUST install the axles into the carrier and align both gears before tightening the carrier bolts. Install carrier, install caps, install axles Ect...Don't forget friction modifier.
