Trying to start motor, need help

    Hello everybody. I've posted previously about the engine wiring on the 390 (1969), it looks right to me from the diagram I got from c104.net. This is the situation:
    Have the tub and fenders off the jeep. I have the distributor, coil, starter solenoid, starter, regulator, alternator, and new battery wired correctly I think from the wiring diagram. I don't have a ballast resistor or ignition switch in the circuit. I'm trying to start it by using a battery cable to connect the opposite terminals of the solenoid. It cranks intermitently, won't keep cranking as it should. The cable I'm using to connect the opposite ends gets hot, sparks and starts smoking a little. When I take a few plugs out it cranks like it should. I've tried to start it two different times, I'm kind of busy with school and the weather has been less than par lately. I'm probably going to look at it again Friday this week so I was just looking for suggestions. Thanks for anything you can think of. -Mike:rofl:

    You need to jump from hot to the s terminal on the coil not across the terminals. Also be sure to groung the regulator and solenoid.

    X2. Jumper cables are designed to supplement, not replace the battery cables. By jumping the "big" terminals on the solenoid, you are effectively taking the solenoid out of the circuit. Try jumping the "hot" terminal of the solenoid to the "s" terminal and you should crank right over. Use a remote-start button, or a screwdriver you don't need anymore... ;)

    I had the same problem...turned out to be a grounding problem. make sure everything is grounded.
