They come with 165 stock. While these engines have been built in excess of 500HP, in reality you will probably see 180 to 200 with mild mods. The big selling point for Jeeps is the torque. 225's run an extremely heavy flywheel to help cancel vibration. This equals almost diesel like low end power. The drawback is the flywheel will not allow the engine to rev quickly. Do a google search on aftermarket mods. You will find cams, intakes and headers for your application. My suggestion is to spend some time behind the wheel before contemplating mods. I think you will be plesently suprised with the engine.
    BTW welcome from Oregon.

X2. More than enough power off-road, and pretty darned peppy on-road in stock form.

Welcome again, i noticed in your introduction that you had 35" tires. is that correct? that is great ,but it might make the old Dauntless a little slugish on acceleration. Headers and dual exhaust seem to help without hurting low end power. mike s.

ya i thought i would go with 33s or keep the 35s and go with a gear change but on the road it doesnt do to bad that 225 has a lot of torque! with like 4.56 gears and mild cam and headers i think it would turn 35s okwhat do you think?

For a point of reference, it turns 33x10.5s easily enough on mine with 3.73 gears, mild cam, HEI, MSD, and headers.

It will break the tires loose in 2nd, but I try not to with a T86 trans and 2-piece 44. ;)

Yeah, much more poop and you're likely to break something ... unless you're careful. But then what's the point?

<The 300-340-350 Buick V8 is a remarkably easy swap, he said in a low voice.>

Again, I would wait and drive it a bit. Find out some things. An old friend of mine had an "identical" 71. his ran 4.88's and an OD while mine came with stock 3.73's. His had a rear tank, while mine had a saddle tank. Etc...You are looking for more power, but do you really need it? talking about swapping gears, but don't know what you have in there now.
    Two pieces of heartfelt advice.
    1) Spend some time with your rig before you decide to modify. This will allow you to begin an "order of priority" list. You might find that after a bit a power steering swap is more important than headers, brake upgrades are more important than an aftermarket cam.
    2) Make your upgrades fit your needs. :"My buddy is running a 500HP Chevy SB so I need one too" is not a realistic reason to do a motor swap. Drive your Jeep. Wheel it. "Hey, I only have one tire pulling in the rear" is a much better reason to install a traction device than " The magazine says I need spools front and rear to get the most out of my Jeep". Building a solid hunting rig is a lot different than building a mud bogger or sand dragger. Lastly, remember it is an early Jeep, not a Supra or an FI Z71. Keep your performance expectations realistic with the rig and you will find that you will be spending a lot more time in the woods wheeling and a lot less time in the garage.

:iagree: try it and see how it does on local trails/street driving before you start and mods.

I have the 225 and 35's with 373's. i have a kenne bell motor w/ 4barrel and headers it does good just i have somewhat sluggish feeling on real low end but high rpms are good power. i think it may be due to the gears with the tire size but i have a holly 650 which i think maybe to much as well but i like it. it has a lot of power was told somewhere in the 200 range.

i've got a pretty much stock 225. except for the HEI and a monza drivers side exhaust manifold for power steering clearance. the HEI alone jumped the accel response. but then i have relatively mild 31" x 10.5 tires and 4.88 diffs.

i concur with those that say to get it trail and street ready first. drive it a while and then make a choice. remember the whole rig is only about 2700 lbs or less. i can hit 70mph in od if i want but i really don't like driving it that fast. never had it stall up hill in 4x4 lr. haven't tried to pull anything.
