So I finally got some time to work on my CJ5 this weekend. The jeep will start but when I would try to drive it would make a grinding sound and barely move. I pulled off the overdrive and the gear attached to it is pretty much worn away. I think I'll be sending it off to Herm to be rebuilt but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on why the gear failed to begin with. Is this a typical failure? I don't want the rebuilt overdrive to suffer the same fate as this one. Is there some routine maintenance that can/should be done on an overdrive?

the transfer case was low on oil
transfer case has to be kept full of oil and the level checked
o'drive first thing to go south when on low oil

That's probably not the only damage you'll find in the OD.

Yeah, I imagine there is some more damage in the OD. And my transfercase is now full of that ground up gear so I'll have to throughly clean/inspect that as well.

Hopefully it wont take to long to get it fixed and back together. I really want to have the Jeep on the road later this spring.

Ouch, well hopefully just that went and saved you from chewing up the rest of the case.

I'd rather have the rest of the tcase grenade - MUCH cheaper than an OD.

I found a less than average way to trash an OD. Rolling along about 65, motor dies. I think the fuel line was full of crud. So I do what any frustrated Jeeper does, jam it in 3rd gear and drop the clutch. BANG! There goes the OD. OUCH! My Dad's Jeep, he didn't talk to me for a week.

I sent the overdrive to Herm last week and he called me this morning and its going to cost just about as much to fix my OD as it is to buy a rebuilt one and give him mine as a core charge.

My brother is going to pick up a T98-D18-OD combo from a salvage yard for me but I was just thinking that the T98 and the T90 would have to have the same size output shaft for the barrel gear in this new OD to bold up to my T90.

So the question is: Are the output shafts in those two transmissions the same size and can use this T98 OD on my drivetrain? If not I will probably try to find a stock 29 tooth T90 output gear to put in so I can at least drive the 5 until I get enough money together to get an OD from Herm.

    Thanks for the help.
