i want to get some essential gauges in my cj5 and dont want to make them look like an afterthought by mounting them under the dash or drilling stupid holes.

i want to put a m38a1 gauge cluster in the center of my dash( around where the speedo is from the factory) like this [IMG] i want a speedo, tach, feul, coolant temp, and oil pressure gauge

i know the m38a1 speedo will work, but will the others work since they are ment for a 24volt system. im currently using a 12 volt system and im wondering if gauges from a early cj2 or 3 will work better because i may actually be able to find them set up for 12v.

is there i place i can buy factory looking 12v gauges? i dont want the stupid looking sunpro gauges. i want it to look right.

sorry about the most being so jumbled im kinda just writing my thoughts

if you are wanting to stay with origionality use reproduction 2A - 3B guages otherwise aftermarket fit and work well enough. Only guage in the cluster that relies on voltage is the Amp meter and you'll probably want to go with a volt meter, right? hth

I considered the same approach for SSDutch.

The only question I never answered was - Does the fact that the A1 dash is taller mean that when you mount the gauge panel into a civvie dash the gauges block the defrost duct?

but since you are cutting your own hole for the cluster you could always move it around to where it wouldint be hitting anything, now i just need to find the pannel and start looking for gauges, any ideas where to get them?

I'll be interested to see if that's the case - I'm not sure you'll be able to go low enough with the cluster to leave room for the defroster duct at the top. It gets tighter at the top of the dash than it looks - because of the way the dash sits higher than the cowl.

If you look at this pic -- that's about has high as the gauges could go. If your panel fits in that space it'll probably work.

Here's a pic with the gauges out and defrost duct in. You can see how the gauges tuck right into the curve of the duct:

The original one's were Stewart Warner Gauges. You can buy those gauges in 12 volts.

Sorry to hear about your motor...

4wd hardware has the panel for $18. I bought Autometer industrial gauges for my M38A1 from www.surpluscenter.com. I got black face, black rim ones. They have white numbers and orange needles. They don't have many left anymore, but they are pretty cheap for quality instruments. They do have some other guages as well, but seldomly can you make a full set.
