There is an optional tach hook up on my HEI distributer/ignition system from Performance Distributors, and I was looking for information on what I should look to get as far as adding a tachometer.

I like the traditional look of this: Autometer tach

but I no longer have a points setup. Any install suggestions/pictures/advice?

My distributer has a tach hookup on it also. I used the same tach that I had with the old distributor. Works fine. The tach actually senses the ground on the coil which is the same with points or electronic distributer. Essentially it just counts the pulses.

The little square port in the pic is where it hooks up. I don't really have any good pics of the setup.

I have one and loe it. I dont remember the brand right now, but it is mounted on the steering column. I may end up putting the correct hole size in the dash and going that route for a cleaner look, but for now, mine works fine. Sorry, i dont have any pics.

The tach will work with any 12 volt ignition system, points or electronic.Just hook the wire that goes to the tach to the dist. terminal with a connector and it will work fine.

Thanks for the info guys. It ought to be interesting to have the tach so I have an idea of what I have been shifting at. Now to find one that will match well to the current speedo setup in the dash...

Here is how I did mine. I don't really like it and plan to do it over after I get some other things finished.

I went with a 2" tach, and arrange the gauges like this:

JeepTherapy: What about your setup doesn't appeal to you?

I kind of like the idea of mounting it to the steering column due to the fact that I wouldn't have to cut into my dash. I would however like to avoid an obnoxiously large tach strapped there.

AvianMan, if you get a chance could you snap a photo of your setup?

    Mike,

I like how your smaller gauges complement the speedo and provide a symmetrical balance. Thanks for the picture!

Here's another approach if you want to leave your dash original......

I went with a 2" (2 2/2"?) on my column and routed the wiring down along with the turn signal wiring.

I have an origonal Jeep 2" tach that bolts to the steering column but it is for a six cylender and connot be calibrated to read an eight. It is accurate on the six but on eight is gets wildly optmistic above 2000 RPM.
