OK, so I have the dual-chambered master cylinder bracket that I salvaged from that DJ5C that I parted out a while ago, and I want to get a new master cylinder before the wrench fest this weekend. I was going to just order one from trilple AAA motors in ol 'Bamy, but the owner was injured in an accident last week and no-one is answering the phone there right now.:( What year CJ can I give to the counter clowns so's that I can obtain the exact same m/c from the FLAPS? It needs to look like the one found in figure "O-2" over @ http://www.postaljeep.net/DJ5Dbrakes.htm

Also, I have the "Warning Light Valve and Switch Assembly" as seen in Figure "D-6" in the aforemntioned link. Should I use this to actuate the brake lights or would I be better off using a mechanical switch on the pedal? Does this thing double as a proportioning valve, or do I even need a proportioning valve with four-wheel drums?

    Don

'71 was a dual-chambered MC, and was the last year for t-t-f pedals.
The '71 MC will look the same except the cover which will have 1 hump instead of two ;)
(the diaphragm will be appropriate for dual chamber)

Proportioning valve shouldn't be necessary for 4 drums.

the 68-71 cjs had the dual reservior setup with through the floor pedals. there were 2 pressure switches which activated the brake lights. one switch on the front, and one on the rear. this way if the front or rear brakes went out, the brake lights would still come on as the one switch whose brakes were still functioning, could turn on the brake lights. there was no prop valve from the factory. there was a junction block that some confuse for a prop valve, but it was just a junction. when i converted to the dual reservior setup, i put an adjustable brake valve into my rear line so that i can adjust front to rear bias. i was redoing all brakes and lines and for another 40 bucks, i bought this part and plumbed it in, although its probably not even necesary.

The original 71 MC has a bolt on lid not one with the basket lever. You can also use one from a 74-75 cj5.

brake light switch will have to be installed the prop valve you spoke of is designed to turn on the brake warning light in the dash if you bust a line hose etc that is the only time it functions a light,as far as needing a prop valve if you are running close to the same size shoes front and rear you shouldnt need it<prop valve real handy with front disc, rear drum though>

Just to veer slightly OT, the postal jeeps built by AM General still had T-t-F pedals up till at least the mid 70s, I pulled apart a '76 that had them, also had the "warning light valve" as well. These things were a strange mixture of ECJs, intermediates & a few weirdities thrown in for fun

re. The proportioning valve- if you are going to 11' drums you will need one in some form. The CJ 9" drums achieved proportioning by using different sized wheel cylinders front to rear but the 11" wheel cylinders are the same size all around so they need a proportioning valve to prevent rear lockup. The link you provided shows PJs had differently sized wheel cylinders front/back so I'd say the valve assembly *does*not* provide any proportioning action :(

p.s.- thanks for the link to the DJ manual, been looking for one for a while now:)

p.p.s- Anybody got replacement part numbers for the PJ wheel cylinders? I'm going to 11"ers & this seems like a better idea than plumbing in a proportioning valve :).
