Here is the pinion from the rear of my 52 M38A1. Wow. Can you say too hot? None of the ring gear teeth were broken believe it or not, but what a mess the oil was. Blecch. I think I have all the parts to repair except a new pinion yoke. New gears are fine spline. Didn't think about that when I ordered parts.

Yeah, it's a keeper. When I got the jeep I new it had "rear end problems" and I figured a broken axle maybe? When I jacked up the rear and ran it in 2x4 and the driveshaft spun with no noise I assumed someone had broken the teeth and just pulled the ring gear. This was not what I was expecting!

Fortunately I've got all the tools to R&R the diff from breaking rear ends in my Jimmy

Look at it, it didn't lock the carrier bearings and spin them to did it? if so you may need a new case as well, not trying to jinx you but the left bearing looks like it might have spun in the cap.

Pretty impressive carnage! Is that a real live case spreader on that?

I don't think it spun. Doesn't look like it. If it looks a little loose, I'll increase pre-load on the cap by filing a little bit.

Yes, that is actually a case spreader. It makes the job a lot easier, but you have to do at least 4 or 5 to justify the $!

I think I have paid for all my diff tools now with side jobs:)
