There are allot of personal perspectives here. I'm thinking if you are just going to enjoy your Jeep as a fun thing, occasional daily driver, and not getting caught up in restoring a military vehicle, a CJ-5 would be OK. There are some queues that make a m38a1 a cool looking rig , but a CJ-5 is fine too. But ultimately the choice is yours! My vote would be a CJ-5, although I am partial.

If you're gonna wheel it....cj5 parts are easier to find than flattie stuff. Plus a lot of later cj7 stuff is adaptable. Probably a few more engine combo's will fit in the cj also. The flatties have a good look but I prefer cjs. just my opinion.

Who said anything about a flatfender tub here? R)

Buy which ever one you can find in the best condition at the best price IMO.

It comes down to personal choice after that. Do you want a tailgate? If so then get a CJ-5 tub. If you plan to do more of a restoration a M38A1 tub might be better, the military rigs get more looks than a civilian Jeep.

Just a couple of my thoughts.

I like the Military dash better with the small speedo and surrounding gauges. I also like the glove box on the driver's side! I also like the no tailgate and spare tire on the rear, but my MB has conditioned me to that's how a jeep is supposed to be. :) I also like the slave receptacle opening which is a great place to mount a battery disconnect switch.

But for the most part, doesn't make a lot of difference as paint masks a lot. I just put a re-pop M38A1 fuel tank in mine for $240. The CJ tank is $99...

In the end, doesn't matter a whole lot as it's going to look like you paint it.

Simple, you see less m-38 a1's. Go with it they are cool. I've never had one.

I'd go with the 5 tub personally. Right now I care more how it runs then how it looks. If I can get a problem fixed for cheaper, that's the way I want to go.

Then again, I'm a college student and either I spend money on stuff I need or I spend it on my jeep. Sadly, the jeep has been winning more then it should.

If I may, this should not be considered as one of your options....

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

I vote m38A1 body. I mounted the battery on the firewall. Gave me quite a storage bo on the cowl.
