I have a fairly stock rebuilt 304 and it has all the power I need. It was bored .10 over and the compression was bumped up to 9.5 to 1 and an upgraded Competition Cams camshaft. Other than these modifications it is stock. Stock 2bbl carb, stock intake manifold, stock heads and stock exhaust manifolds. I did run a stainless steel true dual exhaust with very little back pressure as well.

Sure sounds like the 360 is the way to go for a true performance build.

    Birddog -

I looked up the specs on my cam:

Competition Cams Grind Number A 252H-10 Serial Number GA 4599

    Lift: Intake - .433 Exhaust - .433

Duration at .006: 252 (for both)

I run the stock intake manifold and the stock 2-bbl carb with stock exhaust manifolds. My engine really does have some really good power even with those stock parts. For some real power an aftermarket intake and a 4-bbl would be really nice!! You could even go with a roller cam.

My engine is actually bored 0.30 over. My reciept from the shop does not detail what type of pistons but I seem to remember they are TRW and I distincly recall them telling me the compression was at 9.5 to 1. The receipt I have does not indicate if they decked the heads or not.

When I did my rebuild in 1995 I had the 304 bored .030 over, new pistons/ring/bearings camdymanics RV cam, distributor recurved, and had it balanced, put on a 360 4bbl intake and holley 600 cfm carb. This thing literally screamed. Now 12 years later it is starting to lose some of it's pep, but it will still smoke the tires. Oh, I went to the edlebrock carb for better offroad ability.

I now have a 360 in the garage, that I will start rebuilding as soon as I get my sons 65cj5 out of my garage.

Hi, I'm new to the site, but I've had a number of Jeeps over the years.
The CJ5 I just bought has a 304 with some modifications to it, and it is almost more than the Jeep can handle. I don't believe I will be upgrading this engine for quite a while, even tho it will be used in Competition Mud Drags this summer.
    Visible Mods include:
    carter 4bbl carb
    electronic ignition
    hedman headers
Don't know anything else about it, sorry.

So a larger engine isn't always necessary, IMO.
