I just bought a reman 2100 motorcraft for my 75 cj-5 with a 304. I put it on and the jeep cranks and runs but the carb obviously needs adjustment. It idles a little high and a little lean. Does anybody have an idea how to properly adjust it? I don't have a tach. Do I need one? Also I have read that I need to measure manifold vacuum pressure when adjusting. Is that true?

    the vac helps
but the old tried and true method of lean best idle using your ears is okay if you have no other way
    engine off
gently turn screws all the way in
    back out 2.5 turns each
    start engine
    see how it acts
adjust more/or less with engine running at idle
when engine is warmed up, then adjust the idle speed screw

    To add:

Once the engine is warm, set the idle speed where you want it. Then turn each idle mixture screw in until the engine speed just falls off, then back it out a touch. Do this to each side until turning either screw causes the idle to drop. Readjust the idle speed if necessary then the idle screws again. This sounds like a lot of work, but once you've done it, it only takes a couple minutes. Once the idle speed and mixture is correct, turn each idle screw in about 1/8 turn and reset the idle speed. This setting generally gives lowest emissions, best driveability, and best mileage. No tach or vac gauge needed.
