I just purchased a 53 CJ3A with a warn overdrive and decided to replace all the gear oil to get an idea on what gears it has and to see if I have any issues. So after I drained the fluid out of the x-fer case I noticed that where you put the gear oil in has a pipe fitting pointing up about an inch or so higher then the stock location. Anyways I'm assuming that this is so you can put more oil in the case to lube the overdrive unit. Is this correct? I would hate to burn up the O/D as it's nice with the 5:38 gears it has in it.

I'm sure there are others with more experience on this, but yes, that's probably for more lube. My OD equipped Dana 18 doesn't have a higher fill, but Herm the OD Guy says it's critical to check the lube in the transfer case after it has about 50 miles on it with the OD, just to ensure it has enough...that's probably why they drilled a new fill hole. The ODs were notorious for oil starvation, so it's good to be safe. Fill 'er up, and if it blows out the breather for awhile, then that was too much. Cheers.

Usually the fitting your talking about is to make filling easier. If you have an OD just keep it full. Check the tilt on the tranny to tcase - they share fluid. Some guys would put the fitting in for fill and so that the fluid level in the Tcase stays high enough to keep the tranny fluid level at a good point depending on the size of the fitting.

my jeep came with the warn overdrive, bought it about 12 years ago and have done plenty of fourwheeling and highway driving. i have the normal fill plug on the 18 transfer case and have never had any problems with it getting oil.
