:) I was looking at parts for my bellcrank. There are different size bellcranks. I didn't know this. How do I tell what I have so I can order the correct parts? Also, is there anything I need to be aware of when ordering tie rods and ends or can I just order them by the year model?

    Thanks in advance

I may be wrong on some of the details but IIRC the F4 models used the smaller diameter bellcrank.

In addition to the larger bellcrank factory V6s used a different Ross box & pitman arm than the F4s.

M38A1's used the same Rossbox & stuff as the V6 & larger tierods & ends as well.

Of course after 40 years of mixing & matching you may not be eaxactly stock, if you want the right stuff carefully measure what you have & buy the replacements from a knowledable seller such as Walyck's.

Dont waste any time on the bell crank 1/2 turn of play steering anymore. Its time to step up to a saganaw box.upgrade now before you spend any more money on that system.Advanced adaptors has the mounting plate that goes on your frame rail, then hang the box and install your steering shaft.Done it already, its a totally better way to go.Deak

the CJ-2a/3a use the 3/4" shaft (unsure about 3b). the CJ-5/6's use the 7/8" shaft.

The bellcrank system has lots of moving parts And bushings that wearout and cause play. The pitman arm on the box has a bushing that almost all the time on jeeps that I have seen or worked on is sloppy, woreout. Then the bellcrank bushing wares out also and together they cause double slop play, almost 1/2 turn of play at the wheel. The newer jeeps have a sagnaw box(identified with the "s" logo cast on the side of the box)mounted on the drivers side inner frame rail in front of the radiator. To insatll one you remove your steering box, retain the stock shaft, install a steering knuckle at the end of the steering shaft. Then get a box mount from adavanced adaptors, about $40 weld it to the inner frame rail after boxing in the rails for the 1st 12"for strength.Hang the box install the knuckle on it then get a junkyard steering rod cut it to length, take the differance out of the middle of the rod, weld back together.Cut your tie rod add some length in the middle then hook to the pitman rod on the new box.Pictured is a stock manual jeep box. Also pictured is a power box in the same location as a manual one would be.Hope this sheds some light on the subject. While I agree that saginaw steering is better, the Ross steering is okay, if maintained properly. I've been using mine for going on 9 years, almost 50K miles, and a lot of off roading, with 32" tires....
