In retrospect, I wish I had taken the extra time to figure a way to get the exhaust to stay inside the frame. However, I took the easy way out and went with headers and flow master mufflers positioned outboard of the frame. If you go this route, I can recommend staying away from the PaceSetter headders. They are a good product, but it is my opinion that they exit too far outboard of the frame, near the edge of the body, and, therefore, place the rest of the exhaust in a vulnerable position. I believe I ended up using Headman headers, which exit close to the frame. From there, I installed the smallest mufflers possible and angled them toward the frame to allow the exhaust pipe to hug the frame rail to the rear of the Jeep. Overall, my system has worked well and has been able to survive, but it isn't as clean or as bulletproof as an inboard system. Good luck!
