Does anybody have advice on making rock rails. Size and wall thickness of tubing. Square or round. Any input would be appreciated.

I didn't notice what your where working on. My 3a is a for lite-duty use. I tucked mine into the body line and it's hung from the body. I was only concerned with dropping off a rock onto the rockers. Most of mine is a plate from frame to body edge. [IMG]

A little off the subject, but nice job on the spring eye mounts submerged in the frame, willysworker. Also dig the spring-under. Nice Jeep.

For my DJ-3A I used 1.5-inch 0.120-wall DOM stich welded to the body tub and mounted securely to the cage-to-frame down bars.

Basically, light duty stuff will work with 0.095-0.125 and heavy trail stuff should probably use 3-16. For tubing 0.120-wall HREW can dent a little but DOM stands up and chrome moly is pretty bulletproof.

Willysworker- did you sipe your Super swampers, and if you did has it helped.

The rockrails I plan on making will be made out of 1.5" or 1.25" square tubing connecting to the frame, I just painted the jeep a couple of months ago and would like to protect the body as much as possble.

The rails look good John. Any chance letting me know what something that nice could run? I though about making my own - I like the design of yours, so I would have to bend some big pipe. Might as well get a new tub and scrap the glass one too. So many things to change....

mrunnell, thanks!! I found this guys wedsite, www.TKHFAB.com
,a while back and called him about making CJ5 rock rails. He made
them for '7's. So I drew them up and .pdf'd the drawings to him. He
had a couple of questions about the length, we figured out what I
wanted and he gave me a price. I told him I'd pick them up and I
was going to paint them. So he gave me a price of $175. Not too
    bad.

I can send you the .pdf's if you interested.

He also make cages. He can install them or crank out a kit and you
can weld them. The cage kit only runs $150. So that's my next
    purchase.

Here's a pic of mine, made by fellow forum member Firegod33. IIRC he said he's not making any more right now, but may again in the future.
Mine are 5" tall outside, 6" underneath. Outside is drilled and countersunk to bolt to the tub (mine is bolted to my glass tub, reinforcing strip on the inside. I drilled through the bottom to bolt through my front hoop feet, and through the bottom of the rail. IIRC he starts with 3/16 6x6 angle...

I wanted a set from Firegod, but it's been a while. And I'm not
sure when he was going to get them done. So I had them made
    locally. Mine are 5" x 5" x 3/16" angle. And the tube is 1 1/2".
I liked the way this guy did the angled tube on mine. The main
reason I wanted them was for a step. I used to have nerf bars on
but but the ground clearance was about 7" less @ the rockers. So
this solved several problems @ once.
