I just completed a disc conversion (GM 4x4 calipers) on front axle (D27) and in the process of a 11" upgrade on the rear(D44). The old wheel cylinders had an i.d. of 1 1/8" bore. I am not sure what type and year vehicle the backing plates came from. The backing plates are 11" x 2 1/2" brake shoes. I plan on doing a dual master cylinder upgrade from Herm.

    1. What size wheel cylinders should I use on the rear.
    2. What size brake lines should be used on front and rear.

Most brake systems I have done use 3/16 line to the front and 1/4" line to the rear end and after the T on the rearend housing it reduces to 3/16. Someone else here may have a wheel cyl size that works with that combination, but if they don't I would try and determine what they where on the vehicle the calipers came off of (assuming it had drums on rear). also I prefer to use an OEM type proportioning valve in the system.

What differences do you notice after changing the front brakes to the disks?

The biggest improvement is being able to stop in a straight line after the brakes get wet. Or being able to stop at all with wet brakes. I just swapped out the metallic pads for organic pads but haven't been able to drive it yet with those in. Too much snow here. According to info i got here, the organic pads give better stopping power if you arent using a power booster. They were about $15 at Carquest.
