Here is another newbie post just trying to figure out what I have... To the best of my knowledge, I have a rear flanged D44 and a front D27 But I am curious as to what is inside a stock one. Do they have limited slip or anythink like that? The front D27 has locking Warn hubs, and pics are available at http://www.frappr.com/jasonfltecher

    Thanks everyone.

Fill in the information for your CJ. It helps to know the year when asking questions like those. From what I can see, looks like its a '70-'75 (?). The flanged D44 from that era came either open or w/ a Trac-lock L/S, earlier tapered 44s came w/ a Powerlock L/S (much better unit). On L/S supplied axles, the factory fastened a stamped tag to one of the diff cover bolts that says "use limited slip additive" or something like that. The front diffs generally came w/ open diffs, but some either had or were upgraded w/ a Powerlock (I don't think they came from the factory like that).
If the tags are gone, you can tell if they're open or L/S by jacking up both sides of an axle and spinning a tire. If the other tire spins w/ it in the same direction you have a L/S. If it doesn't move or tries to go the opposite way you have an open diff. Hope this helps.:v6:

Thanks, I had the specifics that I knew about the Jeep posted in my profile. It is a 1970 with the 225, and i know it has the flanged d44. I didn't realize vehicles of that time period had limited slip, but now I do know it was possible. I sespected that this Jeep has limited slip front and rear just by driving it, but I didnt know if it was factory or someone had added it. I guess the only way to really know for sure is to pull it a part and take a peak inside.

You can just jack up one end at a time and spin a wheel. If the other wheel spins in the same direction you have limited slips. If the other wheel spins in the opposite direction the axle is open.
