    Hey everyone,

The T90 in my '57 CJ5 seized up today in 3rd gear. I got the jeep back home and pulled the top-end of the tranny off to look at the gears and shift rails. The case was packed with mud--an insane amount of mud. I guess no one had touched it for many many years.

I dumped the fluid and soaked the whole case in brake clean, wiped everything off, and re-filled it with gear oil. Luckily none of the teeth on the gears are damaged.

My question is; however, how do you get the top-end of the tranny back on the case? I can't seem to get the forks in the right place. When I put it back on Reverse and 1st don't work, but 2nd and 3rd do.

Any ideas? Is the fork for Rev/1st supposed to go in-between the gear that slides around?

    Thanks in advance,
    Evan

you have to align the forks to match the trans gears.
1st and reverse slider has a fork groove in it, as well as the 2-3 synchro assy.
I find it easier if the trans is in neutral; then the tower should be in neutral as well.
as you tilt the tower so you can watch, slide the forks into the grooves and then push the tower on down.

oh, before you try and shift the trans gears.....
block the wheels so the Jeep can't roll if on an incline !

And before you try to drive it, make sure the transfer case isn't in neutral!

Well I was able to get the top-end back on, but it's still not shifting. I've cleaned everything off, and re-lubricated the shifter rails and it shifts through the gears pretty easily when i'm just holding the top-end, but as soon as I bolt it back together it won't shift again.

It seems like to me that the syncro groove that the 2nd/3rd shift fork sits on is jammed. Is that pretty common? I'm guessing I might have to pull the tranny and rebuild it to fix this. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Evan
