Ok, I am new to the jeep world, though I have wanted one for awihle. I lucked up and found an Excellant '69 cj5 3.8L buick v6 3 speed that I traded for another off-road vehicle I had. newer motor and drivetrain is in great shape. I am a mechanic, but I have a question or two.

    1. I believe the card is a rochester 2G (says rochester gm 2 jet on it) and it idles good, but when you give it any gas it want to die out. My first thought was accelerater pump, but if you pump it 4 times or so in quick sucession it is fine, with the engine off you can hear/see it pump fuel as well, so that puts a little doubt in my mind, as well if you choke it 1/4-1/2 way it is fine as well, does that seem like an accellerator pump or not? also if I swap to an electric pump does the rochester need a regulater (8psi pump output)?

    2. What trans/transfer case/differentials should this thing have?

Did you check for vacuum leaks around the carb? It sounds more like an issue with that to me than accelerator pump or fuel pump. Especially when you choke it out, it does well. BTDT.

The answer to your second question is in the Tech Section:

I bet it is a vacuum leak as well. I just fixed a similar problem that ended up being a bad carb gasket where the PO just rtv'd the old broken gasket to the manifold and called it good. I found it by spraying a little carb cleaner around the base of the carb.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that $20 that it is a vacuum leak. ;)

Is it the original motor? I think they are 3.7, not 3.8. (225cid v. 231cid)

Umm.....You may have said brake clean by mistake, but you need to use carb cleaner to check instead of brake parts cleaner. From my experience with a certain fireworks display, brake parts cleaner doesn't burn  , and you are wanting the leak to suck the carb cleaner in so that the engine will rev up to let you know there is a leak.

Carb cleaner will slow it down. Starting fluid will speed it up if there's a leak.

yeah depending on the type ofbrake clean used it can speed it up or slow it down. the stuff i use is just like starting fluid, in fact i have used it for that.

mcscott you ever hit WITC? if so you ought to hit me up and take a look at the heap new years.

Yep, I'm at WITC pretty regularly. We were going to only ride there on Monday of New Years this year because we were going to ride at Wooly's on Saturday, but now it looks like we will be at WITC on Sunday and Monday. Like I have mentioned before, I don't have a trail rig anymore, and wont have until next year, but since I'm vice pres of our club somebody always finds a seat for me, so just look for the bunch with something like my avatar on their rig, and I'll be around somewhere.

What does your Jeep look like so that I'll know what to look for, or have you already posted pics somewhere that I missed?

Nah I haven't posted pictures yet, will probably do that tomorrow. For now it is ugly spray painted gloss black with transport yellow showing through(not by me), but this summer it will look alot differant. I won't be doing much this year with no cage in it, and the fact that I rolled an '82 'yota on memorial day weekend and had a good buddies wife get trapped between the rollbar and a tree and had to winch it off her..... no more half finished cages with people riding in the bed. Period.
