The windshield frame defroster/defogger on my ’75 CJ has always been marginal at best, with a lot of the air escaping out between the windshield frame and the rubber cowl gasket, or just getting cooled in the frame plenum itself. When I rebuilt the Jeep, I made this modification using 3 inch dia. dryer vent and PVC pipe. While it doesn’t look all that pretty, it works really well when I’m plowing snow here in Ct! The 2 dryer vent pipes attach to the outlets of the heater box. The vent pipe is then attached to the 1 ½ PVC pipe with a 2 X 1 ½ reducer. This is followed with 45 and 90 elbows that connect to the riser pipes. The riser pipes are attached to the passenger grab bar with plastic conduit clamps. Because the pipes come up on the passenger side of the vehicle, the hot air is then directed to the driver’s side with a 90 elbow and the passenger’s side with a 45 elbow.

good soultion to a major problem!

    ugly as heck...but a great solution :)

i had an idea to run an electric heater in the middle between the two seats....then route a duct under the passenger seat, up along the roll bar, to the middle of the jeep....split it off into two....one to the front window along the roof/ceiling, one to the rear (for hard tops)

remove the thing during the summer.....never made it...but i liked the idea :)

looks like a good idea. ever since I put my mojave heater in i have been thinking of doing something similar only using an attachment from a shop vac at the end. Thinking about it and doint it are two entirely different things though.

I was actually contemplating something like the picture above but with some of the 1/2" PVC I had left over from the trailer tarp support project. My windshield always gets fogged up when it is raining and cold...

just an observation. i've always been fascinated by the defrost problems with intermediate cj's. mine came with a later windshield frame installed, and i've kept it. when i first purchased the jeep, the defroster didn't work well at all. the fan worked fine, but the window was always covered with water vapor inside.

so, i changed the heater core. iirc, i purchased it from 4wd hardware, but that was 10 years ago. anyway, after installing it, the defroster works great. keeps the inside vapor-free, and defrosts the outside, too. i've never upgraded the fan motor, still the original two-speed. maybe it's the later windshield frame? dunno.

still works, too, after 10 years.
