keep it! I like to keep crap that finds its way under my feet in it, as well as stuff that I need to keep safe. No thief ever thinks to look under the front seat for a trunk! My .02

It's easy to lock. Out of sight out of mind. It's actually the only lockable
    storage I have.

Keep it. Dutch never had one - a PO took it out to mount a heater there. I appreciated the heater, but lockable out of sight storage is harder to find than another heater location.

It might be easier to remove it and replace it. Depends on the floor metal under it. If you need to repair the flooring then replace it, if you don't then repair it. Needs a top door and maybe some material added to fill in where the door isn't ... if you know what I mean.:) R)

My tub is in pretty good shape.
Compared to alot I have seen on the net anyway.

the lid is gone and so I was thinking I might just patch the notch that was cutout with a piece of flat metal and make a lockable lid.
I am making seat mounting brackets and I dont like the passenger seat to pivot up because they tend to rattle around so if I mount it solid I wouldnt be able to get in the box.

    Still thinking on it.

I got a question here,..Do you want to rebiuld it to be like original and water tight? If so, you can't just leave it like that. Replacements are about $180.00. You can decide for yourself. Your tub looks real good for fixing this detail. I'm for fixin it.

IMHO If you are not keeping it stock, pull the box. Reasons,
1st. if there is rust, it is between the floor and the flange that is mounted to the floor. Unless to solve that it will come back. Almost every box I've seen has this moisture problem. trailer/garage queens are the exceptions.
2nd. if you change seats it is very hard to get into. Unless you build a seat frame that incorporates the stock hinges. I have that feature on mine but it doesn't work that good because of seat bottom and back design. No other seat back was designed to fold as flat as the stock unit.
3rd. any major modifications to the trans. tunnel will be harder because of the box.
4th. A lockable center console and rear bed mounted tool box offer greater options for storage
5th. The tool box lid and rim make an excellent access door for your new rear battery location under the deck. LOL, check the photos of my battery location and lid use. [IMG]

Thats prettymuch how I have been leaning.
I want to keep from ripping the whole jeep up, like the original look to a point.

I dont have the lid or missing rim.
Do not want jiggly seats period.
I do think I will make a mesh divider under front edge of both seats.
this way I can put stuff under and not have it slide out under foot.
Going to build a over fender rear tub basket. Removable.
could hinge this and make lockable..

    Tool box goes..

I have two clear plastic snap lid boxes, one under each seat. We (wife and I) keep sunglass, and misc. personal items for outings. Very handy and dust/water proof.
