Their is a pretty deep gouge on my hub? I guess is what you would call it?? where the wheel bearings ride.

Does it need to be replaced or no big deal?

I tried to snap a pic.

Do the bearings "ride" there, or is that just where they press onto? If that's just where the bearing presses on, and the damaged area is smooth enough for the new bearing to go on without trouble, then I'd say go with it. Looks like chisel damage to me, from a PO trying to get an old bearing off.

I think the bearing rides their... their is a lip just behind it. With a little file work a new bearing should slip on their.

I don't think the bearing can ride there. It just holds the inner bearing race. Test fit the bearing on the spindle before installing it in the hub. That way you can make sure the bearing seats flush against the spindle. If it is a little cockeyed break out your favorite file and work it down. It looks like a little emory cloth work on that seal surface wouldn't hurt anything while your there.

when in doubt whip it out.
if you are building a trail rig it is no fun to try to fix some thing with baling wite and gum.

It looks like the grease seal is still on there. You need to replace that one along with the bearing. Spindles aren't cheap so if you can get the bearing to fit over that one, do it. Don't file it so much that the bearing race is loose on it though. It's a slip fit. Just take off the high spots. That's a pretty common bearing failure. The inner one looses lubrication and thrashes itself. Sometimes the inner race will weld itself to the spindle from friction.

The yellow line is where the seal rides. This needs to be smooth so that the seal doesn't get all torn up.

If you need a spindle and you are running a D27, I probably have one you can have for $10 plus shipping. I don't htink it could cost more than $10 to ship it to Colorado.

try ebay, but I don't think you could beat that price!! I would replace the spindle due to seal contact area being damaged-that's the seal that keeps grease outa the brakes!

Im going to replace it, for the simple fact that its better to be safe than sorry. Though their is no visiable metal transfer or blueing on the spindle, I would really hate for it to break in half when im in the middle of nowhere.

    Thanks to all that replyed!!
