There are tons of topics in here about knuckle seals and knuckle pudding but I can't find a "how to replace"

Do I have to take the knuckle apart to replace the seals? If so I think I may just rebuild this D30 I have.

FSM has detailed instructions, that's prolly why you don't find it here. ;)

Just take the old seal off and put the new one on.

I know I do I'm just looking for a shortcut as I already have the seals and I am not quite ready to do the axle swap yet.

IIRC the seals and retainers are split. Just take out the bolts and peel it out. It's been 35 years since I did one but used to do these as a kid for my Dad.

If the seals aren't split as they come, you'll have to cut them. Just feel around the diameter of each one and you'll find the place where the embedded steel ring has a split, and this is where you need to cut the rubber part with a razor blade. Install this split in the 12 O'Clock position and you should be good. Oh, and don't forget to put some 90wt or a thin coat of axle grease on the sealing surface where the seal meets the ball, so that the new seal doesn't tear before the knuckle pudding has a chance to lube it. ;)

Just finished changing seals and king pin bearings. The new seals have a white ring on the back side with a gap where the steel has a gap. Makes splitting it very easy.
