Had this problem for awhile, but now just finally getting around to asking about it. My '53 A1 has the stock drive train, T90/18. The PO installed a hanging pedal kit and the clutch is now hydraulic. Pretty sure anyway, both the break and the clutch pedal both are on the back side of the master cylinder. Under the jeep, I really can't see where the linkage comes from....but anyway. I've noticed in the last few months and with the clutch all the way up (meaning, no pressure on the pedal), I get a "sssshhhhhhhhhhh" sound from under the jeep. If I put even the slightest pressure on the pedal however, it goes away. It doesn't matter if I'm in gear or not. Just if the clutch is engaged or not. Clutch isn't slipping or anything like that...just makes that sound.

Any idea what that could be?

What is involved with replacing/fixing it? Also, will it eventually lead to a catastrophic failure of the transmission? What can I expect?

The throw bearing is moving forward and hiting the clutch slightly and making the noise . It need a small return spring to pull it away back from the clutch.

Front trans bearing could do that.

You have to pull the tranny and transfer case to change the bearing. Worst case senerio is the bearing could eventually freeze up and scatter in a confined space. Could cause problems and leave you stranded. Probably doesn't need immediate attention but I would put it on the short list. As was mentioned make sure the return spring is in place.

What cookieman wrote is possible - check that your clutch release arm has a good return spring. If the throwout bearing is not being pulled away from the pressure plate (clutch cover) it could make a noise.

Otherwise, you usually think of a bad throwout bearing if the sound comes and goes with pressing/releasing the clutch pedal.

Hanging pedals means the pedals hang from under the dash, and the brake (and clutch if hydraulic) cylinders are on the firewall. The factory pedals go through the floor, and the factory brake cylinder is under the floor.

T90 and 18 together aren't all that heavy. Remove the entire trans cover and you've got easy access. Unbolt all the linkage and driveshaft u-joints, then drop the crossmember, transfer case, and trans as one unit. Altough I wasn't overly concerned about putting it back in, I recently dropped a T90/D18 combo in an hour with pneumatic tools.

EDIT - Or you could pick me up on the way to Randolph. We'll drop it in the driveway, then go "test" our work.

Sounds like something I'd do, except that Lawrence is not exactly on my way to Randolph...R) R)

I've been kicking around the idea of just rebuilding the transmission/transfer case for the last year. It is looking like it might be as good a time as any to rebuild the whole shebang. Thanks for the help guys. Now at least I have something to do in the garage this winter.
