Weird U-joint in an early 2A axle shaft

evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

I remember reading on here a while back about this but I can't remember what this is.

I pulled my 2A's front axle shaft out and realized that it's not U-jointed. It has some weird type of joint. Is it bendix? or something like that? I can't remember what it's called.

Also, is it easy to replace this over to a U-jointed shaft? Or should I even bother? I haven't seen any replacement joints of this kind anywhere online...

    Thanks,
    Evan

Not weird, just not a Spicer unit. ;) It still is a U-joint, well, a C.V. joint to be exact.

There were three styles. Rzeppa (Cheppa), Bendix, and later the Spicer Cardan Cross units.

All are interchangeable. Meaning any axleshaft from 41-71 will fit in there.

If it's a bendix, when you pull it out and twist it just right, 5 steel balls come dropping out and roll all over the shop floor.

If you run locking hubs, any D25 axle shaft from a later CJ is a good upgrade, they're avail on ebay all the time for cheap.:hurrican:

D27 axle shaft has the spicer u-joint. They are a direct swap in. No need for shimming.

I took the grease seals off the u-joint when installed and use the knuckle pudding for additional lubercation.. no problems yet.

if you have the bendix-weiss style axles and want to change them to a spicer, i would buy the old axles from you.
