When adjusting my :v6: timing I've got it to where it seems to be running pretty strong. Last weekend I took it to the cabin and after about a half an hour on the interstate I got a lot of pinging (preignition?) and loss of top end power when under load (up grade, passing).

When I adjusted the timing the first time I warmed the engine to temp. (running a 160* thermo.), and everything run good on a test run. I readjusted at the cabin and some of the pinging went away. Worked well all weekend putting around the land, no pinging. Then on the trip home the pinging reappeared. This was only under load and at high end to start with, then seemed to work its way down to every time I use the accelorator, even from a stop at a light. Though, still not as much pinging as on the trip out.

Is this still a timing issue? Should I run a hotter thermostat? I've read that carbon biuld-up can cause this. If so how do fix that? Any ideas?

Is your static timing still where you set it or has it advanced?

Did you remove & plug the vacuum advance when you set it?

I usually set timing with a vacuum gauge plugged right into the manifold, since factory settigns on a 30+ year-old vehicle are only going to be approximations anyway. Try for the highest vacuum reading you can get at idle, then tighten the distributor down and reconnect the vac. advance.

What temp was the engine running when it was pinging?

You know Steve, I once started to set the timing using my vacuum gauge, I got my highest readings at 20* before so I backed it off. Seems like it was well above 20" though. I have ~19" at 5* before.

What temp was the engine running when it was pinging?

She runs about 165* all day long. I don't have a vaccum gage available to me. How important is the amount of preasure and how can it be set? Or can it?

And how do I keep it from doing that? IF you couldn't tell everything I learn is either form trial and error or from this board. So far so good.

Do you have a timing light?

I'm having the same issues with pinging. It's running a 180 degree themostat and the timing is set at 5 degrees. I need to try to look into it this weekend if the weather stays ok.

If your timing isn't wandering when you recheck it...then it must be a fueling issue......a lean condition will cause this to happen if the conditions are right. You may also want to check your total advance. First check the mechanical advance and then the vacume adavance using your timing light. You can add degree marks to your harmonic balancer to see up to 40 deg. Hope this helps.
