Dana 20 Short or long twin stick?

I am very interested in twin sticking the CJ, but when I was looking at a particular website: J.B. Custom Fabrication, I wasn't sure which one is right for me.

There is a CJ20S (Short) and CJ20L (Long).

The short: "This shifter fits the Jeep CJ Dana-20 transfer case that has the stock shifter mounted right up against the transfer case, and a straight shift pattern."

The long: "This shifter fits the Jeep CJ Dana-20 transfer case that has the stock shifter mounted about 7” in front of the transfer case, and a straight shift pattern."

What would cause the stock shifter to mounted 7" in front of the transfer case?

I bought the short version for my '73, 3" black diamond lift and it fits fine. When going to install the link adapters, pay attention one has the bolt hole drilled on the forward end, and one has the hole drilled on the aft end. Its obvious which is which if you are paying attention, but it'll save ya 10 minutes of redoing it.

It appears they have separate twin stick kits for the Commando and they explicitly that the CJ20L "Does not fit J series, Wagoneer, Cherokee, Commando / Jeepster"

Thanks Dana, I'm going to assume the short would fit mine as well.

Did JB's twin sticks require any trimming for their installation?

I did the twin stick using the JB customs as well. No cutting on my 1975 CJ5 but I also have a glass tub. I got my sticks from him on Ebay, and for a steal. I got it all for only $14.00. It was the short version and no one bidded on it. He now has reserves on his auctions, I may be to blame for that. The one thing I wanted to do but couldn't, is get the interlocking pills out so they would work independent.

The 3 speed with the dana 20 would be the short and the T-18 4 speed would be the long.
When I changed my 73 Jeep 3 speed to a 4 speed I was fortunate to get all my stuff out of another 73, floor pan trans cover was different as well as the transfer case shift linkage, much longer. So maybe that is what they are talking about.

This is a pic of my factory Dana 20 with T-18 4speed transfer case single lever shifter. If it is blurry it because it is only in the teens out in that garage right now and I was probably shivering!

Got mine off of Ebay. Works really well. I don't have any pics of it currently, but I can take some if needed.

All the replies have been helpful! Thank you for all the pictures and information. :D I most certainly will be getting the short version. I really appreciate everyone's input!

Here is what Jon from JB Custom Fabrication told me in addition:
