I've got a chance to buy the original defroster duct out of a '56 CJ5 for my '56 CJ5, but the guy says there's two of them. I thought there was only one, like what Herm sells. Can anybody tell me if a '56 would have one duct or two? My tub is in storage that I can't easily get to, so I can't check it out.

This is what Herm's looks like, does anybody have a photo of 1956 vintage defroster duct(s)?

It's my understanding that the plastic duct pictured is better than original, so there might have been two. I know that's not much help.

I'm pretty sure that the original was a single duct and was made out of cardboard.

Well, I'm a-gonna go see what he has, and maybe take it off his hands. Might be original, might not. Anybody else with an early '5 have any input or photos?

      :)

IMHO, AFAIK, this one one thing that remained unchanged over the whole production run and there will be one unless someone homebrewed something to each individual hole.

    Could be wrong.

This is right, I pulled mine out the other day while stripping down my tub and threw it out. Planning on buying Herm's.

My '56 didn't have one at all, so all I have to go by is that photo of Herm's plastic duct. But I have nothing against a plastic one, sounds a lot more durable than cardboard. How do they mount? Is there something that clamps it down or does it have screws?

Ron, the originals look just like the plastic one only they are made out of cardboard. For the life of me I can't remember how they attach. Probably just a screw or stud at either end, either way its a no brainer once you look I'm sure. Its obvious where they mount because of the vents.:v6:

I replaced my original cardboard duct with the plastic one while I had the tub off last winter. Got the same one in your photo from Krage. I wish I had kept the original cardboard. It was not in bad shape and it fit better.

The plastic has a square hose connection and the cardboard was round. The hose made a better connection on the original - IMHO.

I pulled an original (cardboard) one from a 66 CJ5 in the boneyard a couple of months ago, since my 56 didn't have any defroster hose on it when I bought it. The one I got looked just like the one pictured. It has two speed nuts on it which are folded over the edge of the cardboard and takes two sheet metal screws to hold it to the windshield support. IIRC.

The wagons and trucks have 2, so maybe that's what he has. Anyway you can get a picture of what he has?

Oh, THAT would suck! I have to make sure my heater and glove box don't conflict too.

defroster duct is placed up under the dash behind the speedometer, and is held in place by two screws driven down from the top. you have to fold the windshield down onto the hood to access the holes to put the screws in from the topof the dash. hope this makes sense, I just did this a week ago with a duct from Herm on my 61 cj5

Makes perfect sense, thanks! Do you like the duct from Herm? That was my original plan, until this deal popped up. Might have to go that route anyway, I haven't seen this thing in person yet.

OK y'all, here's some photos of what he has...do these look like early 5 defroster ducts? Were there any like this in '55/'56? I'm thinking they came along with that Pontiac heater that I posted a photo of earlier.
