missing serial number plate

My serial number plate is gone. I have the title with the man. id number on it. Does anyone think that it is going to be hard to register the jeep in my name with only the old title and a bill of sale? Also, Is there some way to get a replacement plate for my jeep?

 

i would say it depends on your state if they do inspections or not. we had this problem and had to find the numbers stamped on the frame and the cop came out and looked at it and ok'd the papers.

 

I agree that it depends on the state. I know that in mass. you need the plate. In maine all you need is the bill of sale.

 

You ought to have the serial number plate for sure.

Now, as far as transferring the title...

It has been my experience that as long as it is an intra-state transfer, all the DMV is looking for is a notarized title (if you are in a title state) signed by the previous owner.


Now, for inter-state transactions the DMV wants to compare the serial number on the title with the actual plate ATTACHED to the vehicle. No plate, no title transfer.

In some jurisdictions it could be no plate, vehicle impounded. In most jurisdictions it would be impounded if plate is not attached to vehicle. Jeep attached plates to body tubs with phillips screws up 'till around 69 or so when they started using rivets.

You can get repro plates on ebay that are blank and have no serial number.
