evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

I disconnected my 57 CJ5's voltage regulator and got rid of some of the wires and now I can't remember which wires go where off the regulator.
There are 3 terminals labeled: ARM, FID, and BAT. I'm assuming BAT is battery, but I'm not sure what the other two are for.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Evan

"Bat" actually ends up going to your starter solinoid battery connection.

"Arm" stands for armature, thats where the juice comes out of your generator "A" terminal, it goes through some relays in the regulator to the batt terminal to provide charging current to your battery.

"FLD" connects to the "F" terminal on your genny, it controls to field winding current in the genny to control the voltage output and/or limit current output to a level that won't smoke the wiring.

Theres also a ground connection between the genny & the regulator mounting plate, you can usually get away without it but sometimes funny problems can crop up without it.

Here's a 6 volt diagram but for a vehicle with the floor starter switch instead of the starter solinoid-

You may need to "polarize" the regulator after installing it. Probably you knew that already ;-)

What do you mean by "polarize" the regulator?

You have to touch one wire to one pole and another somewhere else, I can't remember. Your FSM will have instructions.

    Like Sparky says.

Use a jumper wire to very briefly flash the generator "Field" lead to the "Battery" terminal of the regulator.

This gets the generator and the regulator to operate with the same polarity.
