clutch adjustment

evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

Well I was finally able to get my new clutch in. Everything's all hooked up, and I looked down in the access plate on top of the bellhousing and it looked like the engine is all the way on the tranny's input shaft--I can't imagine why it wouldn't be, since the bellhousing is bolted flush the the back of the motor like it should be...

Anyways, when I go to press the clutch pedal it just goes straight to the floor. I looked down in the access plate on the bellhousing again and saw that the throwout bearing doesn't go far enough up the shaft to push on the pressure plate arms. There's got to be a way to adjust this right?

Or would it be something more serious? Although it seems like everything is bolted up fine...

    Thanks in advance,
    Evan

The input shaft could only go so far anyway so I wouldn't worry about what it looks like. The clutch adjustment is in the end of the cable that comes out of the bellhousing. There should be a threaded end and a clevis that screws on the end of it. If you screw it further on you will see that it will pull the throwout bearing towards the pp. You should have about an inch of free play in the pedal when it's adjusted properly. If your linkage is worn/sloppy it'll be hard to get a good adjustment.

Not a problem, all of us are glad to help one another. :) I should have mentioned that you actually turn the cable, should be a wrench flat on it. Also should be a nut on it you have to loosen in order to turn the cable. Let us know your results.

Just got it adjusted. Worked just like you said. I was able to get all the access plates back over the tranny and starting putting the jeep back together. That just leaves the front clip, radiator, and a wiring harnass for tomorrow and she'll be back on the road. I can't wait!

    Thanks again,
    Evan
