    Posted this by mistake on "introductions" - sorry for that. Trying to find out if any of you know of any problems with putting 17x8 inch wheels on a 1970 CJ5 - plan to use all terrain tires. Any suggestions?

    What size tires? What backspacing? Stock width axles?

    Can't think of any problems. Tire size will dictate alot of the problems. The wheel size shouldn't be an issue though. Only 1" bigger than stock was at times and 8" wheels with the right backspacing tuck nicely.

    Any suggestion on tire size? All this 4-wheel and Jeep stuff is totally new to me. Just want the Jeep to look right and not have tires stickin out all sides of the thing!!

    I was asking for suggestions on tire size so no answer there. Don't know the backspacing and believe the axles to be stock - just bought it last week and no very little about Jeeps! A DANGEROUS SITUATION ARISING HERE!

    The only drawback I can think of would be the cost of the tires. 17" tires are usually pretty $pendy...

    Happens that the wheels I like I can only get in 17-inch. May cancel that order and try to find something I can live with in 15 or 16. Don't like the thought of high dollar tires on a recurring basis.

    Tire size anywhere from 28" (stock) to 31" w/ no lift, to 33" w/ 2.5/3" lift (can probably stuff 35s but I'm told you'll rub). Backspacing 2.75" is close to perfect, but most 8" wide wheels will be 3.5"-4.0" which is OK w/ tires 10.5" wide or less (any wider and you'll have to adjust the turn stops reducing your turning radius). Spacers can be added if they rub inside and to help w/ turning radius. IMO increasing wheel size reduces the amount of sidewall and therefore sidewall flex. This makes for a rough ride in an already rough riding vehicle and limits your offroad capabilities.:v6:

    Ok, ya'll have pretty much talked me out of 17 inchers - not going for the "gangsta" look at all. Just gonna keep looking and see what I run across. YA'LL SAVED ME A BUNCH OF MONEY!! THANKS, Booger
