Hey guys, i have a t90 a1 tranny in my 47 2a. It pops out of second gear, which i heard is a common problem. One of my buddys took a look at it, and he said that my best bet would be to buy a new tranny, because he said it looked like water got in mine and that it would be too expensive to rebuild everything.

should i go with another t90? how much can i get one for in good condition? are there any other options i should look at? are there any other trannys that bolt right in and are just as good or better then the t90? i have hte L134 and plan on keeping that, as long with the stock transfer case.

also, what year t90 trannys will fit in this jeep? i see they used the t90 until 1971 or 72, but is it the same thing?

I agree. Second gear will need to be replaced. The bushing wears and that is what pops it out of gear. Look closely where the needle bearing ride. If the water hasn't pock marked the races then a rebuild kit and second gear should fix the problem. There is a good rebuild guide on the Novak web site. Check the synchros also.

I'd say keep the T-90. Properly rebuilt, it'll last another 50 years behind the L134. Used complete transmissions are easy to find, and most parts can still be sourced new. There were a few variations of the T-90: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t90.htm

The only reason to change is if you want a truck 4-speed with a granny 1st. If you can find it, the T-98 from behind a CJ with the F134 should work, but they are really scarce. Even if you found one, you'd have to make a lot of changes to fit it in - floors, crossmember, driveshafts, etc.

Sure. The rebuild kit will replace everything damaged by water anyway. Anything else can be cleaned up by having it hot tanked and/or beadblasted at an auto machine shop. No need to junk it.

with the 5:38 axles -- the three speed will get you anywhere -- like timgr said another 50 years. EASY to rebuild with basic instructions. If you study it long enough, you will see how it comes apart. rebuildable in a couple hours or dilly daly it all weekend.

doing this off memory and VERY over simplified cuz there is more to it....

main thing is to drop lower counter assembly shaft into case then main shaft pulls out of trans. replace items from Herm kit -- The lower counter shaft may be junk so inspect and replace as needed. I stuck needle bearings back to the lower shaft with vaseline then gently lay in bottom of case uninstalled. reinstall main shaft. lift counter shaft into position and reinstall main pin that holds bearings.

I have goofed that up countless times by missing a step so thats why I almost know it by heart.

i would rather have my jeep geared even lower, its got 5 38s now, but its got 31s, so its not as low as i would like it to be. I think im going to rebuild the tranny, and buy that video.

    thanks for all the help.

any advive on making an even lower gear ratio? like somethign with the t-case?

They do offer lower Tcase gears but they are very $$$$. So your either looking at spending the money on tera low gears, 'obrian's, or putting in a 4spd tranny with a low first gear. One other thing that may help is when you order replacement parts put the first gear out of a T90-C in, since it has a little lower ratio than the reg. T90-A ;) if you dont want to go to all the hassle $$$ of doing the other projects.

You have to use both the input shaft and the cluster gear out of a T90C to effectively lower the 1st gear ratio to 3.44
Search this forum for more info on that.
