I have what appears to be an add-on turn signal on my steering column but it doesnt work. I havent been brave enough to mess with the wiring on it because, well im really not very good with electrical stuff.
Honestly i am perfectly happy using the old hand signals whenever another car or pedestrian is nearby as i turn. (reminds me of drives with my dad in his 1930 Plymouth when i was young :))
    so my question is this:
when, if ever did flatties start to get turn signals from the factory? My understanding is if it wasnt installed from the factory then you are not legally required to have it (kinda like seat belts or catalytic converters). If i dont have to have it then i dont want to worry about it. any thoughts?

It appears that turn signals were an option at least until the end of the 50's.

The right side tail lights were an option at least until the mid 50s, a common option but still an option.

If the wiring doesn't look "original" i.e. non-Sparton switch with plastic instead of cloth insulation I'd say you have a case.

I believe you're correct, if it didn't come from the factory you're "grandfathered in"...

I know down here in virginia, I've just slapped Farm Use tags on both of my Willys and drive them all around, no one ever complains or gives me problems.

All you have to do is count the number of wires going to your old turn switch & go to a BIG TRUCK parts store & tell them if its 7 or I believe 9 if it has flashers on it ,, Its less than $30 ...

Oh by the way Im Dave ... Freinds call me HOG ,,, Im new to the board but not to old JEEPs .. Right now Im putting a 59 CJ3B body on my 74 CJ5 ...:AMC:
