   i am having trouble with removing the 'hub' on the rear axle. when i remove the dust cover, it is a keyed axle, so shouldnt a puller remove the 'hub' from the 'shaft'?
   
   im trying to replace the axle seals. so will i have to open the diff cover to remove the axle and hub as one peice?

   Yes, hub puller. Plenty of discussions abound on those joys here try searching a bit.
   
   If it won't pull then you'll likely need to remove it as a unit by removing the backing plate and pulling it out.
