I've been trying to figure this out.... Did early CJ5s have locking hubs to disengage the front axle when driving in 2wd on the pavement?

I know my '57 doesn't, and I was wondering if this is original (looks to be from what I can tell). Are these something I should get?

They were not supplied from the factory. Strictly a dealer-installed item until about 1974 or 5.

The Jeeps came with plain flanges from the factory.

You don't have to have locking hubs. Most people in CA had them because they help the most if you drive on pavement a lot. Saves some wear and tear on the front axle and driveshaft, and is supposed to improve your mpg, though I think the actual increase in mileage is small to nil.

Great! Thanks a bunch. I'm going to be driving this jeep mostly on the pavement as a daily driver. Should I consider locking hubs, or is it just fine the way it is.. does it actually wear that much more?
