    I've got 73 CJ-5. I don't know the transfer case model.
    It appears the pattern is:

    Front

    4H
    2H
    N
    2L
    4L

I did this by watching the front drive shaft and noting the High vs Low ranges.
Seems like a odd pattern from what I've seen on here and other places.
    Looks like an "extra" 2L.
    Can this be?

There's no reliable 2L position from the factory. I thought the 2L would be prevented by the detents, but maybe there's some way to modify the linkage so it's accessible (or maybe that happens with enough wear). You'll note there's no 2L on the knob or listed in the owner's manual. Neither of my new ones had 2L - neutral was active until the knob is about 3-4" off the top of the toolbox. 4L was all the way back - you could touch the toolbox with the knob.

The two low position is a true reliable position and will work on the model 20 cases with the shift pattern like yours. They should have just marked it on the knob, but they didn't want people to know that they could send all that power to the rear wheels only. If you took one apart and watched it travel through the gears you would see that it is a reliable position. Think about it like this. The front has to be in neutral, and we know there is a detent position for that. And the rear is in low and we know there is a detent for that. It is a great asset if you run a front locker, or just want to go slow. The way that your kind of shift linkage pushes through all of the gears enables the driver to select it. COOL ISN'T IT!
