My ol' '57 CJ5 has the stock Carter YF 938SD carb on it, and it's a bit gunked up. I've been wanting to do a rebuild on it for a while, does anyone know where I can find a good (resonably priced) rebuild kit for it?

My local NAPA has a 938 (without the SD) will that work?

    Thanks,
    Evan

Evan, do a search here on the YF. You'll see what happens if you use a FLAPS kit. As far as I know, the only correct rebuild will come from the Carb Shop, in Missouri. They are spendy, though, at about $50! Also look at the Solex option. But, again, it needs to be the right one, not the one from JC Whitney.

Kamel tells me that a YF938SD in good shape will give a Solex a run for it's money. My '56 carb is a 938SA, and supposedly not as good as the SD. He also recommends The Carburetor Shop kits as the best there is.

The YF is a good carb, just very hard to get adjusted just right. The Solex is a simple bolt on replacement, and is why they're popular.

    Thanks everyone!

Unfortunatly I already ordered the kit from NAPA. I think what I'll do is take a look at what it comes with and see how they compare to the originals and decide if I want to use it or not.

I'll give the carb shop a call tomorrow as well and see if I can't get my hands on one of their awesome kits!

Might not be in the same ball park here but my yf rebuild kit from National Auto only had gaskets accelerator diaghram and float needle with seat, all else was not needed, (the little balls and stuff, aparently my carb has no ballsR) )
