Got the flatty to start and run on the pro-jection system. It has a 231of. Two quick questions. First, cylinders 4,5,6 the headers glow bright red after 4-5 minutes of idling. I have an offenhauser dual port intake with the throttle body more to the rear with a 1" spacer. Could this be the cause? Second question, it sometimes backfires. Not all the time. I think it might have something to do with adjusting the settings on the controller. Seems to be lean but when i turn up the fuel is when it seems to back fire more. What do you have your settings at?
    Thanks in advanced.

I don't know anything about that motor or that fuel system, but if the headers are glowing bright red I don't think I'd run it anymore until you figure out why. That's getting mighty hot, and I don't think it's s'poda do that!

Timing or too lean. A too lean condition is much hotter than too rich. You don't want to toast any exhaust valves, so be careful!

Yes of course there's fuel burning in there but glowing headers is a LEAN condition or timing. More fuel will actually help cool the exhaust. Basically you've got too much oxygen in there, which is burning hotter. You add some fuel and it cools down. Seven years as a smog tech, I saw it many times.:)
