Transfer case and Tranny OIL?

    guys im installing my clutch tomorrow and i want to change the fluids in the transmission and transfer case whil im at it. I've got the stock 90/18 combo. Do any of you know what kind of oil i should be putting in either one?

    75/90 wt gear oil. Since you're in the great white north, you shouldn't use anything thicker. :)

    Yes. A gear driven transfer case uses gear oil.

    I think the spec on the 18 is 3 quarts. I don't know about the 90. Just keep putting oil in them till they start to overflow the fill plug. If you have an overdrive, you are supposed to run it for a while both in direct and in overdrive and then check the transfer case, it may take a little more (although I have never had add any).

    Andy, you NEED to get yourself a good FSM as a reference tool. Not that we don't like having you post questions, but the FSM is an INDISPENSIBLE tool for rebuilding, restoring, folding, spindling and well, everything else Jeep-related. I spent DAYS reserching and reading about projects that I was anticipating, and the guidance contained in the manual kept me on the straight and narrow, saving me beaucoup cash dollars in the process. You get the picture. :D

    Actually i already have the manual, but i find that 60 years of jeep building experience is often more valuable than whats in a manual. Sometimes there are a few "tricks" and tips that are definitely usefull from those that have been building jeeps for longer than i have...

    that is after all what these forums are for...

    I didn't mean to come off harshly Andy, I'm sorry. All I meant to say is that for basic specs & such the FSM is the fist place I look.

    BTW- The $10 suction gun trick is the cat's meow! In order to make the 90-wt oil more "user friendly" I usually fill a 5-gallon bucket 1/2 full of straight hot tap water and then float the gear oil bottles in there until I'm ready to use them. Makes the oil flow a LOT more easily!

    hey that suction gun is a great idea! i dropped my tranny and t-case together so i had plenty of room to empty and fill them while they were down... but i'll use that trick next time.

    guys you would not believe the black ooze that came out of both cases... a cross between black tar and mollasses...

    When I changed mine it looked like red Georgia clay. The gas looked like used oil and the whole thing ran and drove fine...

    Are you sure that book says pints? There is a big diference between 3 pints and 3 quarts.

    :iagree: I tried the grease-gun looking thing and it worked ok. The pump is a much cleaner way to supply the oil to the tranny. :)
