My valve lifters have started ticking pretty badly lately, they have slowly gotten worse and worse. What kind of job is it to remove the lifters? Do i have to remove the cylinder head, if so do i have to get the head milled before i put it back on? Also do i need a special tool to remove the lifters? thanks guys i never have been inside a 258 before.

The manual says to lift them out from under the valve cover - doesn't specify a tool. Look here for the '72 manual on the 232/258 http://www.c104.net/manual/Section_01A.pdf Should be easy.

The factory manual is an excellent investment...

I just looked at the man. it says you remove the head and then use lifter removal tool to remove lifters. I have the same problem I will be doing this next weekend.

Sorry, I'm wrong - skimming too fast.

Lisle probably sells a lifter removal tool - FLAPS item.

    STP should be ok.

I may be too late, but just signed on.

I have pulled them out of my bullnose Commando using a strong, round pick up magnet, the kind you often find in auto parts stores (had this one many years). This particular one is a tad smaller in diameter than the lifter and strong enough to pull it out and hold it to put it back in. You only have to pull the valve cover and the pushrods to that particular cylinder (on the later 258, you may have to pull the whole rocker assembly on the earlier models with the one piece shaft through the rockers. The head, though, stays in place.

on a 1975 258 the head definately has to come off, just pulled my engine sun. and looked, I will send a pic when I get home, there is no way a lifter will come thru the pushrod hole. maybe other years are different but this one has to have the head removed like the man. says.
